1.Terms of Use

About this project

World Monitor is an independent, non-commercial side project run by its maintainers in their spare time. It is not a company, a news organisation, a financial service, or an official source of any kind, and it is free to use.

In this document, "we", "us", and "our" mean the people who run World Monitor, and "you" means anyone who uses the website.

Agreement

By using the website at https://world-monitor.com you agree to this document, including the Privacy Policy below. If you do not agree, please do not use the website.

Information only, not advice

World Monitor brings together public and third-party information about world events, conflicts, markets, aircraft, vessels, disease outbreaks, earthquakes, prediction markets, and related topics. It is for general information only.

Nothing on the website is financial, investment, trading, legal, medical, safety, or other professional advice, and nothing on it is a recommendation to buy or sell anything. It is not an emergency or alerting service and must not be relied on where a delay or an error could cause harm. In an emergency, contact your local emergency services and follow official guidance.

Information can be delayed, incomplete, duplicated, misclassified, shown in the wrong place, or simply wrong. Check important information with official or primary sources before acting on it. You are solely responsible for any decisions you make using the website.

Third-party and automated content

Most content comes from third-party sources we do not control, such as news outlets, social media, public agencies, market data providers, and tracking services. We do not verify it, endorse it, or guarantee that it is accurate, lawful, or available. Names, logos, and trademarks belong to their owners, and showing them does not mean those owners are affiliated with or endorse us.

Some content, such as summaries, classifications, ratings, locations, and translations, is generated automatically, including by AI models. Automated content can be wrong or misleading and is not independently verified reporting.

Links and embedded content, such as videos and maps, are provided by third parties under their own terms, and we are not responsible for them.

Accounts

Some features, such as live chat and full Wire feeds, require a free account. You must be at least 16 years old to create one. You are responsible for activity on your account and for keeping your email or Google account secure.

We may refuse, suspend, or delete any account at our discretion, including without notice, for example to deal with abuse.

Chat and your content

Chat messages are public and appear without being reviewed first. You are responsible for what you post, and views expressed by users are their own, not ours. We filter content automatically and moderate when we can, but we cannot catch everything and are not responsible for what other users post.

You keep ownership of what you post. By posting, you give us a free, worldwide, non-exclusive permission to store, display, and distribute it as part of running the website. We may remove any message at any time.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Post anything illegal, hateful, harassing, threatening, sexually explicit, or graphically violent, or anything that infringes someone else's rights.
  • Share other people's personal information, impersonate anyone, or mislead others about who you are.
  • Spam, advertise, or post scams or malicious links.
  • Get around bans, rate limits, filters, or other restrictions, including by creating extra accounts.
  • Attack, probe, overload, or disrupt the website or its infrastructure, or access parts of it you are not meant to.
  • Use the website in a way that breaks the law.

Our content

The World Monitor name, design, code, and original text belong to us or our licensors. You may use the website for personal and informational purposes.

No warranties

The website is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. This includes any warranties of accuracy, reliability, availability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not promise that the website will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that any data or content will be kept.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or inability to use, the website or anything on it. This includes trading or investment losses, lost profits, lost data, and any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, even if we were told they were possible.

Because the website is free, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability to you for all claims related to the website is limited to USD 50.

Nothing in this document excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, such as liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. If you are a consumer, you keep any mandatory rights you have under the law of the place where you live.

Indemnity

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to cover any claims, losses, and costs, including reasonable legal fees, that others bring against us because of your content, your misuse of the website, or your breach of this document.

Changes, suspension, and shutdown

We may change, limit, or remove any feature, data source, or access rule, or suspend or shut down the website entirely, at any time and without notice or liability.

You can stop using the website at any time and ask us to delete your account. We may suspend or end your access at any time if we believe you have broken this document, or to protect the website or other people. Parts of this document that by their nature should continue to apply, such as the disclaimers and limits of liability, survive after your use ends.

2.Privacy Policy

Scope

This policy explains what information the website at https://world-monitor.com collects, why, and what your choices are. We try to collect as little as possible and to describe what we do collect accurately.

When you just browse

You can use the dashboard without an account. Like almost every website, our servers and our hosting and network providers receive standard request data when you visit, such as your IP address, browser and device type, the pages and data requested, and the time of the request. This is used to deliver the site, stop abuse, and fix problems.

To show how many people are online, your browser stores a random visitor ID and sends it to our server while the page is open. It is not linked to your name or email address.

Accounts

An account is optional and is only needed for some features, such as live chat and full Wire feeds. You can sign in with a one-time code sent to your email address, or with Google.

When you sign in we store your email address, a username (generated automatically, and changeable by you), any chat country flag you choose, and basic account details such as when the account was created. If you use Google, Google shares your email address and basic profile information with us. We never see or store your Google password.

Sign-in codes are delivered by a third-party email provider. We check email domains to block disposable or invalid addresses, and we limit sign-in attempts per IP address to prevent abuse.

Live chat is public

Anything you post in chat, together with your username and the time it was sent, is visible to everyone using the chat. Other chat users can also see the country flag you choose, if any, and roughly how long your account has existed. We keep recent messages so new visitors can see the conversation, and we may keep messages sent to the feedback channel for longer so we can act on them.

Do not post personal or sensitive information in chat. Other people can read, copy, or screenshot what you post, and we cannot control what they do with it.

To keep the chat usable we filter messages automatically, and messages may also be checked by a third-party AI moderation service (OpenAI). We may remove messages or restrict accounts. When an account is restricted we may record its account ID, username, and IP address to enforce that restriction.

Cookies and local storage

We do not use advertising cookies, and we do not currently run analytics or tracking tools. If that changes, we will update this page and ask for consent where the law requires it.

We only use storage the site needs in order to work:

  • A sign-in cookie and token, only when you sign in, so you stay signed in.
  • Preferences saved in your browser, such as theme, timezone, language, window layout, chat settings, and whether you have dismissed notices.
  • The random visitor ID used for the online counter.

Third-party services

Most dashboard content comes from public and third-party sources such as news feeds, map data, market data, flight and vessel trackers, prediction markets, and earthquake and health agencies. We usually fetch this data on our own servers, so those sources do not see your visit.

Some content loads directly in your browser from third parties, including map tiles, embedded video players such as YouTube, images, and Wikipedia article previews when you point at or tap a linked name. These providers may receive your IP address and standard request data. Wikipedia previews are requested without cookies or a referrer, so Wikipedia is not told which page you came from.

When you translate a news item or chat message, its text is sent to a third-party translation service such as Google Translate, sometimes directly from your browser.

Third-party services have their own privacy policies, and we are not responsible for how they handle data.

How we use information

  • To run the website and its features, including sign-in and chat.
  • To keep the service secure and prevent spam, abuse, and misuse.
  • To fix bugs and keep the service working.
  • To comply with legal obligations and to protect the project, its users, and others.

What we don't do

  • We do not sell or rent your personal information.
  • We do not show ads or share your information with advertisers.
  • We do not collect payment information. The website is free to use.

When information may be shared

We share information only with the service providers needed to run the site (for example hosting, databases, email delivery, and chat moderation), when the law requires it, or when it is reasonably necessary to protect the safety, rights, or property of the project, its users, or others, including to investigate abuse.

If the project is handed over to someone else, the information described here may be transferred to the new maintainer under this policy. If the project shuts down, we will delete account data within a reasonable time.

Retention

Sign-in sessions expire automatically. Account data is kept until you ask us to delete it, or until the project shuts down. Chat history is limited to recent messages and older ones are removed automatically, although copies may persist briefly in backups. Restriction records are kept while they are needed. Preferences stored in your browser stay there until you clear your browser data.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold, such as encrypted connections and limiting who can access it. As a small side project we cannot guarantee that any system is completely secure, and you use the service at your own risk.

Your choices and rights

You can ask us to access, correct, or delete your account data using the contact details below. We may need to confirm that the account is yours before acting on a request. Depending on where you live, for example in the EU or UK, you may have additional rights under local data protection law, including the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

You can also clear cookies and local storage in your browser settings at any time. Clearing them signs you out and resets your preferences.

Children

World Monitor is not intended for children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.

International use

The service and the providers we use may store and process information in countries other than the one you live in, where data protection laws may differ.
